It looks a lot like a Barn Owl! At least at first glance. But surely not in Denali. Looking closer, the wings are short and rounded. Body shape is a bit top heavy, but maybe a ptarmigan?
Could be. We saw a ton of Willow Ptarmigans all over the park road from about mile 25-54, but never did see one flying. Obviously the lack of color in the tail rules out Willow, but I suppose it could have been White-tailed.
The flight looked falcon like with steady swift wingbeats.
Shrugs.
