The other day my husband told me that a bird attacked our dog, and I immediately thought it had to be one of the mockingbirds because they have been doing that lately...I asked him what it looked like and he said, "It was one of those little ninja birds at your feeder".........I showed him pictures and he picked out a Carolina Chickadee, and I had to laugh because it was most likely just flying to a branch to open it's sunflower seed! The chickadees are so polite at the feeder, they will wait their turn to grab a seed and then they run with it.

What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

Also he could have dropped the seed and was flying down to catch it in flight or get it off the ground. They do that all the time at my house.

I know right? I mean the chickadees who frequent my yard can be feisty but I would never call them a "ninja bird".... they look cute to me, but he meant the mask, reminded him of a ninja. I wish he could spend more time watching them with me, because when I told him the chickadees get a sunflower seed and then have to fly to a branch and hold it down to peck it open, he said, "That is too much work!" I have thought about feeding the already hulled sunflower seeds to make it easier on the chickadees and titmice but I am afraid that it would attract less desirable birds to the yard and I have bluebirds nesting in the back yard.Haha, "ninja bird"!!

As a kid I loved watching the Western Scrub-Jays fly down and pull the shedding fur straight off the back of our German Shepherd for nesting material. He didn't mind too much, but the cats didn't think it was so great when it was their turn. How humiliating!
