I've noticed bald spots on the Blue Heron I see in Edmonds, Washington state. What causes this? Here's an example:

Where are these "bald spots?" I can't find them.

Awesome picture BTW.

Oh and I think mites mite be the cause.

They are on the leading edge of the wing. Weird.

What look like bald spots to me on his wing's leading edge and another spot on his body. Since they're on the leading edge of his wing, I thought it might be something physical like fighting??

Wow! Are these your pictures? They are fantastic!

It is probably just me, but the bald spots just look like brown blobs. Unless it is not literally bald.

Good timber does not grow with ease:

The stronger wind, the stronger trees.

The further sky, the greater length,

The more the storm, the more their strength.

With the closeups, yes, it does look like the birds' coloring.

Yeah, when I google image search Great Blue Heron, the rusty feathers on the leading edge of the wing are seen in every flight shot. Can't say I'd ever noticed it before, but it looks like it's typical.

Cool photos Leroy. I especially like the second one where you can see the water displacement by the wings. Very cool!

I had another thought, could this be blood? Here's another view shot today.

I've been watching the Great Blue Heron nest cam at Cornell (www.allaboutbirds.org), and I noticed reddish areas on the front of the wings on the two adults early on. No one in the associated chat room was mentioning it, so I assumed they were natural.

After seeing this thread I went back and looked at a picture I took on Saturday of a Great Blue Heron and that one has those reddish spots also. This was in Colorado.

Funny that after seeing this thread, I was just up at the lake this past weekend and saw this guy:
