My dad signed me up for a bird walk at Lake Murray, San Diego, CA. It is on July 8th. I was wondering what birds should I be on the look out for?

I went on Ebird to see birds seen there, and a lot would be lifers. And if no one has been, I don't mind.

Haven't been there, but checking eBird is always a good idea. Don't know if you have checked, but the San Diego Audubon has a nice website with brief info on different birding locales. Here is a link to the Lake Murray writeup: link

LOL! I've birded there a ton of times. Being that your from St. Louis, you're going to get several lifers. Ever seen a Clark's Grebe? Western Grebe? California Towhee? Anna's, Costa's, Allen's Hummingbirds? California Thrasher? Hooded Oriole? Great-tailed Grackle? (I know you want that one!) Cassin's and Western Kingbird? Nuttall's Woodpecker? etc. etc. You might even get Tri-colored Blackbird. Anywhere you go here, you will be picking up lifer's left and right. Nearby Mission Trails Park is loaded with Lazuli Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, Black-headed Grosbeaks, White-throated Swifts, Violet-green Swallows, Grasshopper Sparrows, etc. etc. You could easily swing by there for a quick one mile or so hike to see them, after the Lake Murray thing. I used to live about a mile from Lake Murray and ran around it almost every day. Decent Bluegill, Bass, and catfishing there too. That's the lake I pm'd you about where I caught the jumbo Bluegills.

Thanks Guy. No I hadn't read that one yet, but did check ebird! I don't think people report a lot from there, because half the thing Creeker said aren't on the list!!

It really is a good spot to bird. There is the water source, plus lots of brush on the hillsides. Also various types of tall trees in mini groves up and around the lake. I got a few lifers there when I first moved here.
