Each Spring/Summer for one or two nights only we hear this call late at night/early morning from the woods boarding our home in New Jersey. We've been hearing it for 8 years or so, and since it wakes us up, have affectionately named it "The Jersey Devil". I suspect it may be an owl, or some kind of bird of prey, but really have no idea. I hope an educated birder will recognize the call.

This recording was made at 3:30am on May 26 with my iPhone:

Ok, did some more hunting around and now believe this is a Red Fox, not a bird. Fooled me for years!

It sure sounds like a female fox to me. We hear them often in the woods behind our home and in fact watched one sitting in the driveway making this call...
Of course I may be mistaken....

Don't feel bad! I tried like the Devil to ID a bird by sound last week. It was a squirrel.

Last year on the Christmas Bird Count, even the experts were repeatedly fooled by chattering squirrels. Made me feel better! :-)

I have actually heard that late at night while walking down a tree lined path on my way home. Needless to say I picked up my pace. :P

We hear them all the time - just heard one last night. My friend's husband is a police officer, and they get lots of calls from people hearing someone being murdered in the woods - it's always a fox!
