Note: this subject was completely back-lit, and was entirely in dark shadow. I used Photoshop to bring out the detail, but the color was completely lost.

My first guess would be Cooper's Hawk, but I have trouble telling some of the hawks apart.

The hawks in my area (Santa Clara County, CA) are: Norther Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk

Life List: 229

S.Clara County: 170

Latest: Sage Sparrow, Hairy Woodpecker (finally) (5/16), Hammond's Flycatcher, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Nashville Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lazuli Bunting, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, House Wren (4/28), Pigeon Guillemot, Brant (4/14)

Definitely Cooper's. If only they all were so easy as this one.

Thanks to Photoshop. He was so dark in the original shot you couldn't tell it was a bird. Bringing out the detail/light removed all his color. Note the white feet!
