Taken on 6/13/12 in central NY (near Rochester). Believe this is a Common Raven.

Actually, I had posted this pic on a local bird club site and some experts (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) came back with American Crow based on tail, and body & neck feathers. It had me fooled, and I have seen plenty of both!

Funny you say that, when I looked at it last night I was back and forth. The bill does look very 'raven'y, but the lack of a shaggy throat and big scoopy tail had me wondering.

I'm leaning towards crow, because of the bill and head, but I'm probably wrong. From the pics I've seen, the raven seems to have more of a slope up to the back of the head and the bill has a sharper drop off.

and shouldn't a raven have some scraggly face feathers? I have some ravens and crows nearby and always trying to figure out the two.
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!
