Photographed this guy today hanging out in my front yard here at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California (Mojave Desert). It didn't stay long so I only got a couple of shots that were not the best. I was originally thinking a Coopers but the marking on the wings just don't look right to me. Anyone know for sure so my husband can stop guessing?

I agree with Cooper's. You're just seeing the banding on the primaries there, normally those feathers are folded under.

Actually, I think his choice of perching locations is very telling. He's waiting for some fast food to come winging in!

Yeah chilling in the front yard means there is some prey in the front yard.. just saw the pic with the suet feeder, hmm. you are feeding the birds and feeding the other birds maybe lol
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!
