Hi, just found a young bird wandering in my yard and I need help id'ing it. My neighbor said some whooping cranes had nested in his tree a few weeks ago and I'm wondering if this is one. I live southeast of houston if that's any help.Attached File  DSC01055.JPG   141.38K   56 downloads

Welcome to Whatbird. You have a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron.

Also, your neighbor didn't have a Whooping Crane nesting in his tree. Whooping Cranes build nests on the ground with mud and are a highly endangered species, an extremely rare bird. They have only a few specific nesting locations in Canada. Chances are, your neighbor had a Great Egret pair breeding on his property, or the parents of your bird. ;)

Whooping Cranes nest on the ground, in marshy areas. They are also one of the rarest birds in North America. Looks like your neighbor has a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nest, like Liam said.

Thanks, I doubted it is a Whooping crane but I wanted to be sure. I've seen some Egrets in the area but they're not normally in our neighborhood. This young bird can't fly yet and I'm worried a cat will get it.

I don't doubt he can fly, he's probably just not very good at it yet. Were he to be attacked by a cat, I don't think it would be too hard for him to get away.
However, during this time of year, it is advisable (not mandatory) to keep your cats indoors.

I love cats but will never have one. I've seen the statistics on the damage they do to native fauna. It's heartbreaking.

I'm a dog & bird guy, but o.k. with cats. I married into a step-kitty and she stays indoors only, for what should appear to be obvious reasons
