sorry for the poor quality - photographed through our dining room window with an iphone.
date: june 16,2012
location: eden prairie,mn
Bird appeared to be about 18 inches in height.

This bird has been hanging out in our yard for sometime. Has been getting closer to the house (we live on a pond and a heavily wooded area - lots of small animals and other birds including owls, hawks, etc). We originally thought this was a hawk but digging deeper, particularly given the chest markings, I am wondering if it is a peregrine falcon.

thank you for looking.

I'm having trouble coming up with a match, but I can tell you it is not a Peregrin. I know I've seen one of these before but I just can't remember where. I'm positive this is not a native. You might want to check with the local zoos to see if they have had any recent escapes.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

Latest Lifer(s):Harris's Sparrow, Oka Ponds, Campbell, CA, 1/1/13

I thought it looked to gray for a Broad-winged and the bill looked to large, but I could be wrong.

One more for Broad-winged Hawk. Look at that heavily marked chest. Fisherman, I'm thinking the gray tones you are seeing is just because of the lighting in the pic, and the bill looks fine, IMO.

I can buy that. It reminded me of a bird I'd seen in a foreign field guide but, for the life of me, I can't remember which bird or which country.
