I found this duck following the Wood Duck around, apparently a pair of mates. Is it a female Mallard or a Blue-winged Teal?

Where was this taken?
It was taken in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge around the Memorial weekend.

Rather odd couple.... but agree, Mama Mallard IS with quite the handsome guy!
Seney is a cool place (and for those unfamiliar with the upper Great Lakes area.... it's in the U.P. of MI.)

why is this not fairly normal? I see wood ducks and mallards together quite a bit here.. I dont think they are prejudiced
dont think they can or would mate though?

Exactly -- even if they do end up mating, the babies most likely won't be able to.

This is definitely a couple. That seems a bit unusual.
