I found this duck following the Wood Duck around, apparently a pair of mates. Is it a female Mallard or a Blue-winged Teal?

It was taken in the Seney National Wildlife Refuge around the Memorial weekend.

Rather odd couple.... but agree, Mama Mallard IS with quite the handsome guy!
Seney is a cool place (and for those unfamiliar with the upper Great Lakes area.... it's in the U.P. of MI.)

why is this not fairly normal? I see wood ducks and mallards together quite a bit here.. I dont think they are prejudiced dont think they can or would mate though?

Exactly -- even if they do end up mating, the babies most likely won't be able to.
