almost positive it's a pileated woodpecker, but need ID since it's a new bird for me. I have been wrong before with my ID. Picture taken yesterday from my yard near LA/MS state line on gulf coast.

Isn't that an Ivo...

JUST KIDDING!!! But I would like to know if that's a PILE-i-ated, PILL-i-ated, or PILE-ated Woodpecker? The downside to WhatBird forums is no sound!!!

I've heard that pill-e-ated and pile-e-ated are both correct. I say it the first way.

Ok, thanks! So PILL-i-ated is at least a safe choice?

Had two of these guys in pop up in my front porch flower baskets in early July of last year. I was walking down my front hall looking out the glass window of my front door when this really funny looking head popped up out of a flower basket. It took a few stunned moments for me to get what I was seeing then had to race around the house trying to find my camera which had wandered away from where I had left it. Luckily was able to get a couple of shots of what turned out to be two PILL-i-ated Woodpeckers looking for bugs...I guess...my flower baskets. :o

This was probably the best of the fuzzy bunch.
