I've been playing around with Nik Color Efex Pro 4 for the past few days and just wanted some other opinions.

Which do you like better, and why?

The second image has more detail in the feathers, albeit at the expensive of a little more background 'noise', and I prefer it overall.
I also use NIK software.

If you could put the bird in the second image against the background in the top image you'd have a real winner.

That's easy enough to do. I was just messing around with tonal contrast and the detail extractor, and didn't really bother using control points. Just wanted to get an idea for what I could do.

I like the second edit better as well. It gives meaning to the wild waves and the crazy wind indicating stormy weather. The contrast on the feathers suggests this, though I do think Jim makes a valid point.

I always use Nik Color EFEX Pro tonal contrast on my bird photos to bring out detail. If you use it as a Plug-In to Photoshop, you can just select the bird and avoid the background noise.

This is a very nice shot. I agree with the other comments about the detail being better in the second edit. However, I like the color of the first image better in that it looks more natural. The second image has a slight pinkish/reddish cast to it that detracts from it in my opinion. But that should be easy enough to remove. Perhaps it is an artifact of the detail enhancing process.
