The only hawks I ever see turn out to be Red-Tailed (no offense Red-Tailed Hawks) and I figure these are the same? Can you tell if these are younger and/or can you tell the gender? I like to think this is a young couple, but it could be siblings, or just pals.

They look like juvenile Broad-winged Hawks to me, but I don't get to see enough of these guys perched to feel comfortable ruling out juvenile Red-shouldered. If you've got a shot of them in flight?

These look more like young Red-shouldered Hawks. Where was the pic taken? And I don't think you need to worry about offending any Red-tails, they don't read this forum :) .

Wow, I hope you're right. Here's a pic I took shortly before or after the other. I assume this guy is one of those two, but I'm not certain. They were hanging out along the James River here in Richmond VA.

I think psweet is correct, young Broad-winged Hawks. Being from California I don't immediately think of Broad-winged.

I'm not too familiar with Broad-wingeds, but these look too long-legged for Broad-winged. They look just like the Red-shouldered juvies I see here. Posted Image

I'm not sure if I'm right about this, but it seems that juvenile Broad-winged hawks have a somewhat horizontal appearance to their breast streaking whereas juvenile Red-shouldered appear to have vertical streaking. If there's any credence to that these would be Red-shouldered.

The National Audubon Society tells me that the photo of the lone hawk is:

"This is a first-year Red-shouldered Hawk. Broad-winged are similar, but would have stronger markings on the tail and heavier streaking on the breast."

Mystery solved, congrats on the correct ID'ers. :D
