I noticed this GBH today on a rock that is a favourite hangout for him. I usually try to wait until they begin their flight, for a more dynamic look.
I don't shoot 'continuous' as I find I can usually get the shot I'm after, without wasting tons of frames. I'll show the 2nd shot first as it worked out, even at 1/800 (I shoot wide open at f5.6).

Looks like you had some tough lighting to work with. I think the picture would have a lot more impact if the heron was flying at you, but obviously you can't control that.

Yes, if the GBH flew my way it would have been easier! But actually, I was surprised I got what I did.
