Taking a trip to Kodiak Alaska Early September t and want to know what unique birds to be on the lookout for. My last trip was uneventful in terms of feathered friends. The only birds active were the Bald Eagles, Black Billed Magpies, Ravens, Seagulls and Pigeons. Was so cold there wasn't as much as a chirp coming from any trees in the woods. I wasn't exactly birding at the time, but couldn't handle being outside long enough to consider it either. Windy and well below freezing, not for me!

But yeah, outside of me needing to get myself some fresh eagle pictures, and a decent magpie shot...whats out there? I seriously hate getting on planes, but now the prospect of going to see new birds is more motivating.

My step father, an avid hunter won't be around at that time but says there's many different ducks there that are local (most of which I have probably not seen). Hopefully he'll leave some of the good spot locations to check out. It's s starting point at least.

When I was in Seward I got something like 12 species right from the downtown harbor that was 15 minutes from the hotel. I'd be focusing on sea birds while at Kodiak, instead of looking for passerines.

That being said, it should be super easy to pick up Mew and Glaucous-winged gulls. I had plenty of Arctic terns back in May/June. I was also able to get several alcid species right off the beach....so keep your eyes open.

I'd like to go to Alaska too......meaning not just Kodiak Island

But hopefully the weather will be good and it won't decide to rain ALL week. Bad for cameras and annoying for wearing glasses. Taking this trip to enjoy the outdoors more, rain will prevent that.

So ermines are related to weasels? Very cool, I didn't know that. And yeah it was totally adorable. It wanted to get across the street to feast on whatever the magpile (group of magpies ) was eating. But it decided not to after seeing me. I've got a few more pictures I can post of it, just need to resize them.
