New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

I think that last one's a juvenile Indigo Bunting -- I can't find any sources that describe distinct streaking on the undersides of Blue Grosbeak at any age.

You may be right, I was looking more at the bill, which looks pretty gross, than at the streaking.

I agree with Savannah Sparrow after consulting my guides. As for the bunting/grosbeak, I've never seen a juvenile, so I really have no idea

The bill on the last looks much too big for Indigo Bunting to me. I can't find anything about streaking on Blue Grosbeak either, but I don't know what else it could be.

What about a juvenile Dickcissel for the last bird? I've never seen one in person, but some pictures I found show some underside streaking and the body shape/bill match. I'd like to see a little bit more of a supercilium, but this bird really doesn't look like and Indigo or B. Grosbeak to me so I'm throwing out a guess.

I thought about that, but every source I could find showed a strong malar and supercilium, without the fine head streaking.

Yeah, I thinking I was forcing that one. In all likelihood, probably a juvie Indigo with a hefty bill.

I am going for a female Blue Grosbeak for the last one. The strong cinnamon wingbars indicate such, unlike an Indigo Bunting, in which it would be less noticeable. Also, the big beak would make more sense. I can't really explain the streaks on the sides, as the Bunting and the Grosbeak both don't have them.

FWIW...I agree with these except #4. I am in the juvie Indigo Bunting camp on that one.

Juvenile Indigo Buntings should show some streaking on the breast and sides.

Sorry to keep bashing this thread to death, but how do you account for the belly streaking, Liam? Seems like a pretty substantial mark that shouldn't be variable...I can't find a reference or photo of a Grosbeak displaying that (even fledglings appear to have clean breasts).

Maybe Cobal and Tricia are right and it's a House Finch. :huh:

I have one more, but it is a nearly identical angle. Honestly I was finished hiking and saw the bird land in a tree above my car and took a couple quick pics. I really thought that it was a house finch in the field. I wish I would have taken more. Lesson learned.
