Was keeping an eye on them today, thinking they may fledge any day now. The mom was perched directly in front of the nestbox for several hours, calling to them and one looked like it was trying to get out of the box, and she flew over as if to make it go back inside. She didn't have any food with her, and the baby was fully expecting to be fed! They kept peeping out of the box and calling to their parents.

What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

LOL right! They have it made right now with all meals being delivered and their own cleaning service! Life is going to get a whole lot tougher in the next day or two when they make that leap! But as hot as it has been I bet they will like being out of that little box so when we do get a breeze they can benefit from it!

I can't imagine what it's like to be cooped up (no pun intended) in a little box out in the direct sunlight like that. It reminds me of the movie Cool Hand Luke, the partwhere Luke has to spend a few nights "in the box".

Wonderful pics! Mine are peaking out of the hole...not quite sticking their heads out yet, though.

Late this afternoon/evening (not yet dark but getting close) my bluebird family came back to visit the yard, ALL of them! I was tickled to see them, didn't have a camera as I was loading a moving truck haha, so I just took a break and observed them. The youngsters did not go to the ground to feed for themselves, but the parents were flapping their wings and chirping to them, then the parents would fly down and grab a bug. The parents did not feed it to the babies, I am guessing they were trying to show them how easy it is to get something good to eat!

Creeker, you don't have to be a classic to like the classics.

Thanks Sailormom, but if I remember correctly you called me old once, too.

You're right, you called yourself old. Sorry.

You should both rent Cool Hand Luke, it's a great movie.

I am in Washington now, it is coooooooooold to me here but I still want to take advantage of birds that I can see here and not at home in SC, so does anyone have any suggestions? Staying here at my son's apartment, there is a wooded area behind it, and I can hear plenty of birds I would love to see! After the long drive out here and then getting moved and settled into his apartment I have not had time to explore the available nearby resources. I am ready to go see some birds! lol
