This morning I was watching the mulberry tree mob when I noticed a Cedar Waxwing at the top of a Cottonwood close by. I have two robin families who constantly harrass and chase each other around the yard. I've been brushed by a wing tip a time or two as they fly over and around me. Several of the robins flew up to the Cedar Waxwing and chased it off. The Cedar Waxwing flew around in a circle and landed back on the same spot. A robin hopped towards it and I saw the Cedar Waxwing do something that amazed me. It stood it's ground and then slammed its beak into the branch it was sitting on. I could hear the impact from where I was sitting. It did this a couple of times and the Robin backed off.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Is it a threat display? I am intrigued by it. :)

lol sounds like he was saying, " I am staying RIGHT HERE!"
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

Apparently the robin got the same impression. They left it alone after that. LOL

That's really interesting. I wonder if such behavior has been documented anywhere?
