I had been seeing a hummingbird checking out my flowers and doing a random flyby of the feeders, so I bought a hummingbird feeder. When I have the feeder out, NO HUMMINGBIRD! With the hot weather I am afraid to leave it out too long, that it might ferment, so I took it back inside to clean and in the meantime hung my nyjer feeder back up. Sure enough, the hummingbird came back today. It came right up to me on the patio as if to say it wanted its nectar back! I had the sprinklers on and part of the spray was hitting a tree, so a ton of birds were using it to take a shower in, and the hummingbird stopped there to shower too, then it was off again.
I was wondering if there is a preferred spot to hang the nectar feeder? (been hanging it on a shepherds hook, close to a weeping willow tree) It has a clear bottle top with an ant mote, but the base is bright red with little yellow and white ports. It is maybe 2 feet from the flowers (that have since bloomed and dried up with the intense heat) that the bird originally came to. Is height a factor?
Thanks in advance if you can help me place it.
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

Just hang it in an obvious spot where the bird can see it as it flies by the yard. Best height is eye-level but that is more for you than the bird.

If you've already got Hummers coming by, just hang up the feeder and leave it up - right out in the open. They will find it. Mine are right in the middle of the yard, not around any flowers; hanging up with 3-4 other types of feeders. If you want to avoid wasting nectar until they get going, just put a little in the feeder so you don't throw out so much when you change it/wash it out every couple of days.

I agree, just put it where its visible. We have a window feeder thats bright red and we can access it from our deck. They like to come up, sit down, and drink the nectar while they watch us clean the dishes in the sink. We also have an oriole feeder up (no orioles yet...) but the hummingbirds still love it!

Mine never show up when the feeder is out. But if the feeder is indoors to be cleaned, I am certain to see at least one! At my sons house in San Diego, his neighbor has TONS of hummingbirds flitting about.
