First I apologize for the bad photos--I had the camera set for unmoving subjects in deep shade when this bird came flying by in the bright sky, and I just swung the camera up without thinking of the settings.

Usually when I see a bird of prey it's a Cooper's hawk, a Red-tailed Hawk, or a Swallow-tailed Kite. Obviously this isn't a Swallow-tailed Kite but I have no idea what it is. Maybe a Red-tailed Hawk? I can't tell if there's a belly band on the body. The head appears to be light colored. There seems to be a little reddish brown on the ends of the wings.

Can anyone help? I wish I'd reset the camera and had better pictures!

Where are you? Assuming you're in the SE? It looks like a Mississippi Kite.

Anywhere a person would regularly see Swallow-tailed Kites must be in the SE -- probably Florida. And I agree, this is an adult Mississippi Kite.

I'm sorry, I didn't mention I'm in northeast Florida--I thought I had the location by the avatar. You know, at first glance I thought the bird looked something like a kite but since it's not a Swallow-tailed Kite I didn't think any more about it. There was a Mississippi Kite around here last summer so it could be! Thanks!

It's always a good idea to say where you saw the bird, even if it has the town you live in by your avatar - a lot of people travel while they bird....or bird while they travel!
