SoCal San Joaquin WS July 11. Are the two swimming birds Black-necked Stilts. And, yes, they are swimming. My previous, very blurry, shot is of them farther from shore where only the Great Blue Herons and Great Egets stand. If not Stilts, what are they?

Look like Stilts to me. I think most shorebirds are capable of swimming, I have seen LB Dowitcher do it, and phalaropes are known for it of course.

Thanks for confirming my opinion.
I've seen a Black-crowned Night Heron swimming...... very strange, indeed.

Yes, Liam, I thought they looked like juveniles. The Black-crowned Night Heron I saw swimming was between juvenile and adult in plumage. Maybe like all teenagers they like to try all that life has to offer!

I was discussing this with a couple of local birders on Sunday. We saw a flock of phalaropes at a local sewage treatment plant and told them about my lifer Wilson's Phalaropes which were swimming near the dam at a nearby reservoir, the water depth was over 160 feet! One of the other birders told me about a GBH that he had seen land in water of a similar depth, float for a few minutes and then take off.

All this is so interesting. There are two "families" of Black-necks at another SJWS pond, but I've never seen the juveniles enter the water more than toe deep. Maybe I'll go at a different time and catch them taking a dip.
