This time of year is fun because of all the juvies. Birds were seen in southeast VA along a cornfield with an open field on one side (first bird was there) and a small stand of tall pines between the field and a reedy tall grass swamp. There is also a salt water tidal river at the end of the field.

The first is probably a juvie white throated sparrow or maybe a savannah. The yellow above the eye is a good clue, but the lack of a white throat is confusing

The second could be anything, but with a bill this shape, I think it may be a juvenile wader/heron. I thought it was a thrasher or thrush until I got home and saw the picture. Although it is not shown here, the tail is quite long.

meghann, if you're ever going to be in Chicago, I'd be glad to tell you where they are! (Or even a few Henslow's...)

Lancaster county VA at the Weems airport (a grass runway surrounded by corn fields). Here is an ebird link to the site. If you want to go, please send me a note, so I can let my cousin know you are on the way and give you better directions to the place the birds are. If he cuts the field, I will let you know. Best way to see them is to just sit down in the grass and listen for the calls.

Forgot to mention, bring some bug spray. Lots of bugs on the farm.

Oops added this to the wrong thread.

Went back to get a few more photos. I went while the sun was still up today, so the photos are less grainy. Even got a grasshopper sparrow eating a grasshopper.
