Finally! Finally, after many trials and tribulations I got a lifer this morning. And it wasn't easy. Oh no, of course not. I have, what we call around here, Merrill luck. Which is bad luck.

First of all, I want to thank the individual who mentioned in this forum that playing the bird's song will draw it in. It did. I nearly despaired, though. Every time I had it lined up for a great shot, a calamity happened. The first issue was an angry spider. Yes, you read that correctly. I was chased around my car by a darn spider. I don't know if it was being amorous or trying to inject venom that would cause my face to drop off. I finally climbed on top of my canvas folding chair with cup holders and watched it circle around my chair several times. It finally scampered off into some bushes. It was an ugly little thing. I think it was some type of trap door spider.

Aaaaanway.....I settled down (with my feet firmly OFF the ground) and tried again. It flew in again. Just in time for a truck to drive by and HONK AT ME!!!! Of course it spooked the bird and it flew off across the river. The guy that honked at me? I went over and talked to him later and he was looking for a good spot to, "whittle". Sure enough, He had a knife in one hand and the branch of a tree in the other. I made short pleasantries and got the H-E-double toothpick out of there. It was the middle of nowhere. There wasn't a house for miles. Needless to say I got a little spooked. Okay, a LOT spooked.

Third time is the charm as they say. I tried again and this time he was very cooperative. In fact, the little darling (substitute your own descriptive expletive or colorful metaphor) sat on a branch in plain view and sang his little heart out... as I drove away. Birds. Sometimes its just better to eat them. (totally kidding) So, without further ado:

Ain't he purty? I'm so proud. I teared up. Seriously. My Yellow-Breasted Chat lifer. I have been stalking this bird since late May.

Congratulations!!! I loved your story :) I actually laughed out loud about the spider haha. I guess your persistence paid of in a big way!

LOL, never know! Sneaky little buggers they are... so sneaky I've never seen a chipping sparrow! Though after looking it up and listening to it I MIGHT have heard one before.

Let the hunt begin!!

Congrats on the lifer. My lifer was similarly difficult and then one of the easiest birds I've ever gotten. I was at a park in San Joaquin County, right at the base of the dam at Lake Comanche, for an Audubon picnic and wird walk. One of the other birders, who had arrived a couple of hours ahead of everyone else, said she had heard and then seen a chat at the gate to the fish hatchery. I, along with two others, spent two hours at the spot with only one quick (maybe 1/10 of a second) look at a bird that may have been a chat. I went back the following week and searched the entire park without even hearing anything that even came close to sounding like a chat. I left the park and went into town to have lunch. On my way home I past another park at the base of the dam of a different reservoir and decided to stop and bird. I walked a couple of miles up a trail into the chaparal, then came back and walked the trail along the river. I thought the river trail looked like good habitat for a chat so I played the call a few times. Nothing! I went back to my car and was putting my gear in the trunk to leave, and what should I hear from the river, directly in front of my car? You guessed it! A Yellow-breasted Chat! I grabbed my bins and iPod, walked over and played the call and there he was! It was also a milestone bird, #250 on my life list. I went home VERY happy that day.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

O.k., so it isn't just me. Whew! I hear them all up and down the San Juan River and across the road from my house. On my neighor's property. I have played the song for weeks on my property trying to lure it over. Not happening. I finally got my lucky break down at the Lion's Wilderness Park (with river access) about five miles from the house. I had no idea they were such elusive little things. :P
