Hi All,

Sorry I've been scarce - my dog of almost 17 years, my baby, Thor!, grew [terminally] ill and eventually succumbed to cancer. I've been pretty much dead to the world.

I rescued two baby JRs (long story) and brought them home day before yesterday. Apparently I've had some upland birds living in the tall grasses in the "back 40" of my yard and didn't know it.

The babies found these birds and I managed to rescue three of the five and place them in a neighbor's yard. They're not great fliers and infant JRTs ... are...

What are they? I'm thinking some kind of grouse, but my books are packed away at the moment. Any help?

These are Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix). They are often kept as for thier meat, eggs (yes the eggs are small, but considered a delicacy in some parts of Asia, Ive eaten a few myself) or as aviary birds and are not good fliers at all. I would strongly recommend capturing them and taking them to a pet store or breeder.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (at the time of the original writing-293, currently-294)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 210 as of 6/11.

Latest Lifer(s):Cassin's Kingbird, Basalt Campgrounds, San Luis Reservoir SRA, Merced County, CA, 6/3/13; Harris's Sparrow, Oka Ponds, Campbell, CA, 1/1/13

Thank you!

If I have the opportunity, I will. I'll look around for who would be appropriate.

I fear if I have the opportunity - the two little terrorists living in my house will have found the opportunity first. I've stopped feeding birds in the yard too.

Thank you for thinking of me Meghann!

I'd post pictures of the new babies that have joined me - but the only decent photos I have so far don't belong on WhatBird.

I was also sorry to hear about your dog (was concentrating on the bird and forgot to say that in the last post). I know how you must have felt, I had to put my dog, Shorty, down a few years ago, on the day before my birthday no less. I found a pic of Shorty taken just a few days after I brought him home, the pic was 17 years old.

Hi Jodie! I, too, have been wondering where you were; have missed your humor and lovely photos. So sorry about your friend; been there, done that. It's not easy.
