I live in eastern Idaho and I found this baby bird underneath a tree on a rainy day. It was wet and cold so I took it inside and got it dry.
I need help on identifying this bird. It is about 4 and a half inches long.
And also, I would really appreciate some advice on how to take proper care of it and raise it as I know nothing about birds.
Thank you very much(:

It's a Mourning Dove and doves are notoriously difficult to hand feed. The parents reguritate a substance known as crop milk, which is made up of partially digested seed and a thick, cottage cheese like subtsance secreted from the digestive tract and is extremely hard to duplicate. The best thing to do with the bird is to put it back where you found it, the parents are no doubt in the area and will take care of it until it able to fend for itself. If the parents do not come back, then I would suggest finding a wildlife rehabber in your area, it is illegal to keep a native bird in captivity unless you are a lisenced rehabber, no matter how good your intentons.

We always had to force feed these guys. Not fun. But luckily, you know where it came from and can put it back.

Yeah I've tried to feed it some mushy cat food but it refused. It's raining and cold and dark outside right now so I will probably take it back out to where I found it tomorrow morning.

Well last night I took the bird back out to where I found it and after setting it on the ground he surprisingly just took off and flew away!
I didn't even know he could fly yet. haha. Guess everything worked out.

That's good to hear! It's nice to have someone ask for advice about how to deal with a baby bird and then have them actually follow the recommendations and do the right thing.

Yeah I figured it'd probably be best to listen to you guys. I myself am clueless about bird care.
And as much as I wanted to keep it and care for it, I would likely just be putting the bird in more danger.
Thank you very much for the help!(:
