I was in the back yard the other day & noticed some fuss in the wild rasberrys. out popped this bird. He only stayed long enough for this one picture. I have searched thru 6 different bird guides with no luck of identifing it. It has a bill like a sparrow or grossbeak , markings on the head like a downy woodpecker, short round tail feathers (look through the leaves) like a sparrow, and the back has some light colorings. hope you can help.
As a help since I cant seem to gain access to the profile page I'm located in central southern New Hampshire.

Juvenile Black-headed Grosbeak?

The more I look at it, the more I don't know. :(

Looks like a juvenile Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The contrast on the shot appears to be a bit high, and the tail feathers may not have grown in fully.

White-crowned Sparrow is my guess. If not, maybe a White-throated Sparrow, but my money's still on White-crowned.

psweet, There is a mated pair that had a clutch this year in the tree line at the back over where the rasberrys are.
Jenny, I do have a pair of white throated sparrows that I got pics of earlier in the year. So using that as a size comparisonhere this guy or gal is about 50% larger but not as large as the m/f grosbeak.

Neither White-crowned nor White-throated would have the black below the eye.

Yeah, I can't see it being anything else but a juvie rose-breasted grosbeak. Sure has well-defined markings!

I agree with Rose-breasted Grosbeak. With such a contrasting face, it's likely to be a young male.

I agree with the other posters who said juvenile male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The beak shape, build, approximate size, and facial markings all fit for RBG, and I think I can see a notched tail through those leaves if I squint.
