One more from the San Bernardino Mountains this weekend (So Cal). The other birders were saying this was a female purple finch on the right, and we all know how finches can all blend together sometimes..... is this a purple? Or a female usual (aka House Finch)? Something else? She's bigger than the pine siskins.

Bold head pattern and short streaking on breast, I would go Purple Finch here.

Oh don't feel so bad....when I first got to the mountains and took a short walk I was ignoring these guys (see picture below) since I stupidly thought 'oh, just another house finch'. Finches shall never cease to be sneaky. They're NOT house finches NOR purple finches :P

Actually, now that I look at your female a bit more, Cassin's might be a better fit. Our West Coast Purples have less crisp streaking and a duller back. Better wait for more input......

I'd agree with Cassin's Finch -- in addition to the crisp streaking, there's a bit of white above the eye and the primary projection appears to be really long.

So Cassin's it is. Thankfully the males are easier to identify :)

Got the bird group confused at least.
