I think this is a Small Squirrel, it is from Montosa Canyon trip, but I think it was at Sweetwarter, Tucson, southern Arizona, Aug, 21, 2011.

Fraser, I think you have a prairie dog there, but don't take that to the bank since I have never seen one before.

This beast was maybe 6 inches maybe 11 including the tail.

I think Prairie Dogs are much bigger, but the new forums have alerted me as to how much I do not know about all of the others of Natures Creatures. My typical statement is... 'What I don't know about Nature's Creatures' Fills Many Books.

I gotta get some books.

Maybe Bigfoot can change the title here???

Baby Prairie Dogs are out of the burrow when they're pretty small, but if there are Prairie Dogs at Sweetwater it's a pretty recent thing, I think.

I have since learned that this is a Round-tailed Ground Squirrel.

Saw them again yesterday.

That looks very much like a Richardson's Ground Squirrel but I don't think their range extends that far south. I suspect the Richardson's & Round-tailed are closely related
