I think this is a Downy Woodpecker but it could be a Hairy WP. I see the Downy in my backyard all the time (South Carolina) but I phot'd this WP in
woods in a coastal area. I thought maybe it might be the Hairy. What are the differences between the two? Thanks.
Woodpecker...but what kind?

Looks like a downy to me, with that short bill. Hairy woodpeckers are a few inches longer than downy woodpeckers, and have a longer bill.

Based on bill size and dark spots on the white tail feathers, I'd call it a Downy.
