I live in So Cal, and saw this Rose-breasted Grosbeak in late April.

Just today, over 3 months later, I saw this Rose-breasted Grosbeak, probably only 1/2 mile or less from the prior sighting.

There obviously is a significant plumage change between the two birds. Is it possible this is the same bird? Rose-breasted Grosbeak are quite rare here in So Cal, so it would be interesting to know whether I have been lucky enough to find one or two different birds.

You'll have to flip a coin... heads=same bird, tails= diff birds. ;)

But range would suggest same bird.

Either it's the same bird, or you have the hotspot to beat all hotspots in Socal to see a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Would be interesting to know if there is a female in the vicinity, or is this guy breeding with the Black-headeds?

OK, well it is good to know that it could be the same bird. Maybe he has a hard time telling the difference between female RB and BH Grosbeaks, too? This bird was probably 100-200 yards down the trail from the RB. Normally I would just instantly call this a BH, but now I'll have to start scrutinizing these guys a bit more. Sorry for the poor pics, but well, birds don't always cooperate. Anyone have tips on how to differentiate the two, and which one this may be?
