These were taken last month in upstate NY. It was kind of earwig like but not exactly. It raised it's tail when prodded.

My guess is some kind of Rove Beetle, but beyond that I don't know.

I had a similar photo identified at bugguide.net as gold and brown rove beetle Ontholestes cingulatus.
