All photos taken in Garden County Nebraska (panhandle) 2007, 08, 09

(All but #4 were taken on my older camera that had a much lower dpi, all were zoomed in, and final pictures cropped, so quality may make ID hard to impossible)

The 1st, and probably 4th going by psweet's previous pointer that "Pheasants are the only 'chicken birds' we have with long tails." would be Ring-Necked Pheasants.

The others... would be total guesses on my part, but I THINK (based on bill shape and tail length) that there are two different species, at least, in the five photos.

Most of your birds are female Ring-necked Pheasants, except #3 which looks like a Sharp-tailed Grouse to me. I've never seen a grouse of any type, though, so wait for a second opinion.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

Latest Lifer(s):Harris's Sparrow, Oka Ponds, Campbell, CA, 1/1/13

Favorite Recent Bird(s):Blue-winged Teal (Pair), Peregrine Falcon, Sanderling (3),Franklin's Gull (9), Modesto Wastewater Treatment Facility, Modesto, CA, 5/12/13, MacGillivray's Warber, Adair Rd., Modesto, CA, 5/5/13, Long-eared Owl, Mercy Hot Springs, Fresno County, CA, 4/29/13, Lawrwnce's Goldfinch, Panoche Shool, San Benito County, CA, 4/29/13,Lawrwnce's Goldfinch, McHenry Rec Area, Escalon, CA, 4/21/13, Snowy Plover, Modesto Water Treatment Plant, Modesto, CA, 4/14/13, Blue-winged Teal, Redhead, San Luis NWR, Merced County, CA, 3/11/13, Eurasian Wigeon, American Bittern, Santa Fe Grade Rd., Merced County,, CA, 3/9/13

I had previously ID'd #3 as a Sharp-tailed Grouse, but I am never very certain of my ID's. That was why I mixed it in here with the others.

#2 looks like it has a rounded curved beak, to me. So I did not think it would be a Ring-necked Pheasant.

#2 looks like the head is turned slightly left and it appears to be holding something in its bill making the bill shape look odd.

I do not think its a trick of photography or something in its mouth. Here is another shot, I believe, of the same bird. (consecutive numbers in the camera, one time/date May 9, 2007 5:11:48, the next May 9, 2007 5:12:02). This one still has the curved bill, and it is definately NOT anything in the bill. But I have no clue what bird it would be if it were not a ring-necked pheasant.
I did not think they had curved bills, though.

Oops. Yup, they DO have curved bills. That is what happens when I start going back and forth from one bird to another.

Did anyone want to second the opininon that #3 is a sharp-tailed grouse?

Feathered legs & white breast say yes, #3 is a sharpie.

(Well, the other sharpie.)
