Shorebird ID help

Thanks Eric, I was expecting "spots".
How about this one? Best I can do with the field guide is Pectoral Sandpiper. Am I close?

Those guys are tough! Whoever ID's this one, please give out a few clues or marks. To my eyes, looks like the Western in Peterson, but that's 100% a guess...

Yeah, I'd say you are correct with Pectoral Sandpiper on your second bird. The yellow legs help to narrow down your choices, and then the relatively dense breast markings which terminate abruptly should make the ID.

well here are some ID tips for sandpipers
peeps are bairds,white rumped, least, western, and semipalmated
Pectoral- has yellow legs, curved beak, bigger then peep species
spotted- bobs tail, orange feet, has spots on whole body, and line through eye
western- black legs, very rusty peep species, has long bill with a litle bump on end like a water droplet
semipalmated- black legs, short black bill
baird's- usually solitary, black bill, and black feet
white rumped- black legs, long body, black bill, white rump when flying, and usually solitary
least- yellow legs and black curved bill
purple- orange feet, purplish body, orange with black tip bill
solitary- eyering, spotted wings, straight black bill
stilt- rusty streaks on head, long black slightly curved bill, and long yellow legs
dunlin- black belly, long black slightly curved bill, short black legs

Parula's cheat sheet is great, but I feel I should mention that Spotted Sandpipers only have the spotted belly and Dunlin only have the black belly in breeding plumage.

Parula, thanks, that will come in handy. Here is the last one from my outing. I had to crop it down to get some kind of sense what it was. I ID it as a Greater Yellowlegs because of the curved bill. Was I in the ballpark?

I thought Greater Yellowlegs' bills curved upwards. Stilt? Pectoral? Ugh, even with a field guide, these things are confusing!!!

it is always great to help. fisherman is right dunlin's only have black bellies in summer plumage and spotted sandpipers only have spots in summer

Yes, the greater yellowlegs' bill curves upward. That's as far as I'll go trying to ID that one!
