If you ever are super excited about something, you can post it here.

As most of you know I've been DYING to see some shorebirds! Well this morning at eight thirty I went to Riverlands. . . a place that I had never not gotten a lifer. I figured I would get at least one lifer (Least Terns nest there).

Well we got there, and I noticed some Killdeer, GBHs, Great Egrets, and some geese. We went to the Audobon center, hoping to see the terns. I happened to see the guy who helped me lead that bird walk back in may, so I said hi, and caught up on birding stuff. The sign that says what's been going on lately said, "Sedge Wrens are all over right now." Since Sedge Wrens would be a lifer, I got excited. I went out to look in the Ellis Bay, and I saw several Least Terns flying around, lifer number one.

We Left to go to Heron Pond Trail, where I thought I might have a chance at seeing some Sedge Wrens, and shorebirds. When I got there, I saw three Great Blue Herons, and a Great Egret, no wonder they named it Heron Pond! I continued walking, and spooked several Killdeer. Soon, the six foot tall reeds were all around. . . perfect habitat for a Sedge Wren. I kept hearing some sort of bird, hoping it was a Sedge Wren I kept looking. After walking a 1/4 of a mile, with no luck with Sedge Wrens, or shorebirds, I decided to turn around, and go somewhere else.

We went to the dam, hoping to see something cool. Well, the only cool thing I saw was a Gull. I think it was a Ring-billed Gull. There were also lots of swallow. . . not sure what kind, but I think they were NRWS.

We stopped at many of the observation decks to get a good look, we saw some Cormorants, tons of Killdeer, and a Raccoon corpse. I think the Coyotes got to it. :) There wasn't much cool, so we continued. (just to be clear we is my mom, brother and I)

I decided to go to Ellis Island, hoping that they still had the bay drained. Before we got there, I decided to stop at Teal Pond. At first glance it looked just like some Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and TONS of Killdeer. But one small shorebird flying caught my eye. It landed on a small island in the middle of the pond. (more of a lake IMO) It was dwarfed by the Killdeer standing next to it. I knew it was a peep.

I got very excited, but that was soon shattered. My camera, and binocs didn't get me close enough, so it was super hard to see what it was. I took the picture none the less, and went back to the Audobon center to ask the naturalist. He said it looked like Pectoral, Solitary, or Least Sandpiper. I didn't think it looked like a Solitary at all, and not that much like a Pec either. I said it looked like a least to me. It had yellow legs, so that's really all I thought it could be.

I went to Ellis Island, and the water was there, they had put it back. So I went back to Teal Pond, one last time. After patroling the shore for a while I saw a Spotted Sandpiper, which would be a photo lifer, so I snapped several photo. My family laughed because I belly crawled to get a good shot. Don't know why that's so funny.

It spooked, and I followed it. Don't know why but I did. Thank heavens I did!!!!!! While following it, I noticed TINY shorebirds foraging nearby. I went and got very good shots of what I'm 99% sure are Leasts. I will post them later.

I forgot to say. . . on the way back, we missed our turn. We thought we found a spot to U turn, but on the light it said no U turn, so we just turned left. And then on that road it said no U turn. We turned left on the next road, which was a small Conservation area! I got my photo lifer Little Blue Heron while we were there. :D So it was a nice ending.

Sounds like you had a great day!

OK, I'll play. Today I saw three large Vs of Canada Geese flying south. Of course, I'm not sure what their destination was (way south, or just down the road), but it reminded me that fall is coming and the summer birding doldrums are about over (birding in the heat with the attendant bugs is not so much fun). I much prefer migration and winter birding.

Jim I did not know that Leasts nest there. They would be a lifer for me as well. As would Sedge Wren.

I think I know where I will be going this weekend.

On second thought I think I may chase the White Ibis seen at Carlyle last weekend. :)

I came up from the basement after putting a load of clothes in the wash and just happen to glance out the family room window and saw a sharp shinned hawk perched on our fence facing the neighbors yard. I even a got photo through the window. It is not a good photo. It is not the first time we have had one but it is still cool to see.

I am also looking forward to fall and migrating birds. And no leaves on the trees making them easier to spot. :P

Great one JimBob.

Sometimes missing a turn is the best! I get lost easily, but I find lots of interesting things that way.

I saw an Osprey this weekend!!! Two actually, in a HUGE nest. The shuttle driver commented there was a bald eagle nest on the cell phone tower, so I just had to go look. I knew it didn't look right so I grabbed my camera so I could zoom in. After a bit it took off, and it was gorgeous! So fun! And if I hadn't learned to pay attention to birds I'd have missed it. Sometimes the surprises are the best!

Well I'm pretty excited about this.
Went to the wastewater with the audubon this morning for shorebird hunting. Got 8 lifers and 1 new Michigan bird (a flock of great egrets).

My first was one that has been hiding from me for quite some time. Two juvie Black-crowned Night-Herons:

Found a few Bonaparte's Gulls sporting dapper nonbreeding plumage (this individual might be a juvie):
Posted Image

Someone noticed a large sandpiper apparently being chased by some swallows. We went over there and found this, best sighting of the day:

Also added Least, Semipalmated, Solitary, Pectoral, and Lesser Yellowlegs to my list.

Guess who got to 200 today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ME! 200 was Greater Yellowlegs. . . not a great one, but I'm okay with that. Got them at Riverlands

Also got Stilt Sandpiper, and Short-billed Dowitcher.

The highlight was an ibis. . . which is rare for MO. Through personal observations I believe it is a White-faced Ibis, because of the pinkish lores, and reddish eyes. Got a really cruddy picture, but I will post it soon. Some think it's a hybrid, and other think Glossy because they say it's more likely, but I'm just going with what I saw. It was a juvie.

Anyway, probably the happiest kid in MO right now! :D :D
