Being a newb, im terrible at ID-ing woodpeckers, especially ones where I get only a blurry photo. This one was on the daily dog walk. This guy was pretty big, and I'd like some suggestions, just in case I see him/her again, I can ID more easily!!!! THANKS :)

Looks like a Red-shouldered Hawk, judging by the checkerboard pattern on its wings, and the rufous colored flanks.

I'm not seeing a northern flicker here. From overall size, maybe. From how it is setting, maybe. From part of the country, also maybe. But I've never seen northern flickers have that strong rufous color on their lower flanks. On the underpart of their tails, yes, and even occasionally on part of their head, also yes. I just know its one of the few birds of its type that I do get to see with some regularity at certain times of year and at certain places out here in southern California, but like I just said, I've never seen that much rufous color on their lower flanks. But you are in the front range area of Colorado, and some bird species have slight color variations in different part so the country, so you guys may be right.

DHSBirdman, the bird has its wings drooping slightly, the rufous color you're refering to is actually on the shafts of the flight feathers.

Gee, I guess I'm totally nuts but the bird looks like some type of dove or pigeon. Head is too small for any hawk and for flicker as well.

In all seriousness, I agree with Northern Flicker here.

Keep an eye out and an ear out, though. Flickers and Koels have distinctive voices. :D

Thanks so much guys! it's good to have confirmation that at least some of my instincts may be correct ;-) When I first saw it, I thought it was a flicker/woodpecker or something like it, but I've never seen a flicker so I figured it was too big...from what everyone's saying maybe not. I chose to take a pic instead of standing and observing just because I figured he'd fly off fast. Hopefully he comes back around sometime soon :-)

Flickers are big, chunky woodpeckers, so that would make sense. Bigger than red-bellieds.

After looking closer ...ahem....I agree this isn't a Red-shouldered hawk...or Hawk of any kind for that matter. I was going by the color pattern as I saw it...bad thing to do. Northern Flicker is the best fit. I'll put myself to bed on this one............ ;)
