Napa, twilight... perched on a branch almost over us, screeching almost like a hawk -- and indeed, there was a red-tail nearby and when it flew into some nearby eucalypti, the owl followed it. (It may also have helped that my gf was making little screeches of her own.)

[EDIT: the gf points out that maybe it wasn't screeching -- maybe we never heard its voice, only the hawk nearby. Maybe this is actually a young great horned.]

Patterning suggests Great Horned. A juvenile by the looks of it.

Might be a juvenile, but it could also be it has molted off its "horn" feathers.

I saw little stubs of horns.

It didn't seem very big -- the hawk may have had more wingspan. So I can well believe it might be a young-un.

Definitely a Great Horned. One of the coolest birds there is :D
