Actually about a week old, but this was my first real chance to get in the field and play around. Here are a few sample shots...

My gosh, Joe, did you mortgage the house? A D800 and 500 lens, eh! :)

Nice shots. Congratulations, and have fun.

Hmmm I'll have to look more into that tomorrow. I'm not sure if photobucket will host that large of a file, since it appears I can't change the permissions on Zenfolio.

I am, but I'm a bit torn. My Sigma 500 does not play well with teleconverters, and the loss of the extra reach of the DX sucks big time. It also makes zero sense to use a FX camera in DX mode, but I haven't messed with the 1.2x crop mode yet. We'll have to see....I know this combo would work MUCH better with a Nikon 500/600 with tc's, but well, I certainly don't have $8k to toss down for one of them.

Might have to see what Nikon announces later this year after Photokina as far as a DX body. I know they're rumoring a 24mp FX D600 for $1600 or so....if they can come up with a 24ish MP DX I might have to make the jump.

Btw, I won't sell anyone but it's a Semipalm not a Piping! :)

Whoops! sorry about that. I'm a beginneer birder! :x

and i'm pretty much running the same gear as you- Sigma 500mm with a D800. I'm having the exact same frustratations and issues, especially on the money front- because that's the first thing I looked at too! Mine's treated me pretty well, but the 500mm will no longer play nice with my D800- i have to manually focus! The d800 itself takes a ton of getting used too-- but don't be afraid to switch it to crop mode. I do it often, and it still gives me really high res quality, more than enough to print 16x20 if i needed.

Manually focus? That's nuts. My 500mm focuses just fine---all of those shots were with AF, and actually, I think it AF's a heck of a lot faster than on my D300.

I've only been out in the field once, and the lighting sucked, so I'm anxious to spend some quality time outside when it's not 100 degrees and sweat-shop humid out. My issue is that DX mode is 15MP....why spend $3k on a D800 for 15MP crop mode when I can use my 4 year old D300 and get 12.1MP.....and I've got PLENTY of pictures over 16x20 blown up that look fantastic.

The whole point is being able to use the 36MP....and with a 500/600mm lens that would actually AF with TC's on....it'd probably be fantastic. My 500 will occasionally focus with a 1.4x TC, but it's so hit and miss it's not really worth it. It's a complete train wreck with a 2X.

Maybe I'll win the 300 million plus powerball Wed night and order one of every supertele Nikon makes.

Oh yeah. I have no idea why it won't focus- but it won't focus. However, it's seemed to work out pretty well for me (if you look at my other post in here, technical difficulties- grr , you'll see a few hawk shots I took with the manual focus)

and I know it's bleh in regards to going into DX mode- believe me, I know and I understand- I went through the same thing! But, it's also a matter of composition; I love my full frame camera, and it makes a huge difference when i'm photographing a landscape or something- but it just doesn't work for wildlife when my lens is already far away (haven't done the teleconverter thing yet). The DX mode's come in handy plenty of times-especially on my hawk shots!

Nice work, Joe! Interesting thread as well, though I'm a little late jumping on the bandwagon it seems. I hope Nikon decides to upgrade the 80-400mm.

They are. They applied for a patent for a new 80-400 a few months back.

A bird photographer friend who 'upgraded' to a FF Nikon uses the Nikon 200-400 lens.

But my gosh, at almost $7000. that's an expensive way to go, and still is 'only' a 400mm lens!

Yeah, that's crazy. I'm not really sure of the bird photography use of a 200-400mm lens. For the price point, might as well buy a 500mm or 600mm lens....I'd suggest the 200-400mm is a much better option for wildlife photography of the non avian kind.

Ah, nice! Thanks for letting me know and the link! This may be wishful thinking, but I hope they release it this year.

Get down and dirty!!! After dinner I've got a few pictures that I need to upload that tell a funny story about getting down for those low angle shots.
