In the last month I have seen 3 of these in my front yard. They are about the size of a pigeon, the two slightly larger have 4 distinct bright red combs standing straight up about 3/5". The third I am guessing was a female, with no comb but bright red headed.

I have seen them 3 times landing on my oak with a wild bird seed feeder, but the are not interested in the seed. Seems one male pecked the tree once before the leaders (with combs) took off and the female following within a minute.

Awesome birds, but never stay ling enough to get a picture. I have seen this same description in several states in the US, but never an answer as to what they are.

Sure would love to know so I can figure out what they like to eat.... and get a picture!

It would be a big help if you could tell us where you are.

What exactly do you mean by combs? In birds, combs are fleshy, featherless areas, like a chicken has. The thing on top of the head is a comb http://www.google.co...Q9QEwBQ&dur=731

It sounds more like you're talking about a crest, which is just feathers that stick up. Maybe a pileated woodpecker?

If they have a very loud call, they would be Pileated Woodpeckers. They also make very loud drumming sounds on tree trunks, especially during mating season. You know, the loudest drummer get the girl!!
