SoCal, San Joaquin, August 15........ Could this possibly be a Rufous? I see Allen's almost every day, and this bird has much more rufous than I usually see on an Allen's. Does the green cap totally outlaw a Rufous? Perhaps it's an "Orange-rumped Allen's."

Looks like a Rufous to me -- they can also have green caps.

Thing is, it seems to have green on its back, in which case it would be an Allen's.

I see an awful lot of rufous behind the wings, and doc stated it looks much more rufous than the Allen's he usually sees. Problem is that Rufous can have fairly extensive green on the back. Given the date, and the comments by the OP, I don't see why it wouldn't be a Rufous, but to be sure I guess you'd have to look up close at the tail feathers.

Well, I looked in the North America Sibley [had looked only in the Western earlier] and his illustrations of the Green-backed Rufous and the Orange-rumped Allen's look identical! As psweet says, we'd have to examine the tail, and all I captured was the image, not the live bird................ so, I'll never know for sure. I'll go with Orange-rumped Allen's to be safe.
