Seen in eastern Inyo County, California near the Nevada border in last two weeks.

Red-tailed Hawk.
ABA list: 295 Latest: Swamp Sparrow
2013: 220

Were these shots of the same bird? The one on the left looks like it could be a very young Red-tailed, but the one on the right isn't. It's missing the patagial bar and it's got a pale are on only the outer primaries. If they are both the same, I'd be considering a very young Swainson's Hawk.

Yes, they are pictures of the same bird. The biologist who took the pictures thought it was a young Swainson's. I tend to agree with your keen eye ;-).

I'm not 100% from these pictures, but all of the marks Psweet cited point to Swainson's.

Based on? I'm curious as to how you explain the lack of patagial bars and the white marks on the outer primaries.

Not disagreeing that this is a Red-Tail, but you should always cite marks when offering an alternative ID, Falcon.
