I took this picture with my girlfriend in Bayonne New Jersey,,,Is it a mix...young or what

It's a domestic of some sort.

definately not a mallard....maybe a ruffus or canvas back...the blotch head pattern throws me off...any ideas

We have a forum member, Liam, who is quite adept at ducks. Hopefully he'll be along at some point and he can give you some ideas.

This is a domestic duck and likely a Mallard. Nearly all domestic breeds of duck come from wild Mallards originally.

I agree with a Duck.
Looks like part Pekin and part Chocolate something or other, making it Moose Tracks.
