For my birthday, my parents got me a new lens-- a 400mm f/5.6L USM lens. Since I'm going to my favorite refuge tomorrow on my birthday, I got my lens a day early to practice. Here are some of the first shots of backyard birds (much heavier than a 55-250mm!!)

And along came a Chestnut-sided Warbler, a new yard bird!

Then a Magnolia made its presence known, both a new yard and life bird!

Love the new lens! :D

GreatHorn, say it with me... :)

I like the nuthatch shot the best, because you can't really see the feeders.

My favorite is the woodpecker, just because he's so cute.
Also, I know a location where you can send your 55-250mm if you want a little extra living space. I'll find a way to jam it onto my SX40 somehow.

Congratulations, Melissa.
I've seen 'photographers' with a lot more years in photography (and a lot more years in life!) who haven't taken as good photos.
Yes, the 400L is heavier than your 55-250, but I think you will get used to it pretty quickly. Plus, it is so nice to be able to shoot wide open at f5.6 with no loss of quality.

have fun :)

Haha, I'm going to keep it, sorry! ;) Still need a lightweight lens.

have fun :)

Very nice! What body are you using? And what distance was this at? Judging by the size of the image and bird size I'd assume pretty close <15ft. Really really nice quality on these pictures...

Thanks! I use a Canon Rebel T3 body, and the feeder birds were shot at about 20ft away, as with the Magnolia Warbler, but the Chestnut-sided Warbler was taken from about 40ft away. But I cropped these pictures (little on the feeder birds, more on the warblers).

They're very good pictures, and I'm very jealous.

That's quite a birthday gift, and it looks like you've wasted no time making good use of it.

Congrats! Have fun with it (looks like you already have, actually)!

Someday Nikon will wise up and make a direct competitor to this lens. I know literally dozens of birder-photographers that picked Canon specifically because this lens (or the 100-400 zoom) was available from Canon and not Nikon.

Yes, I really hope they will. They really need to update the 80-400 lens. It's long overdue.
