Blue on woodpecker surprised me.

I believe this is a female Red-bellied woodpecker, but was surprised by the blue coloration on the front and head.

I do believe this is a Red-Bellied Woodpecker also. I have at least one reference book (Stokes) that shows a lightish blue patch between the two red areas. Please tell me where you took this photograph, I've never seen one in real life.

Female Red-Bellied Woodpecker. The females have the grayish-blue patch where the males are all red. I have tons of them in my area.

This picture was taken in South Central Oklahoma. This is a common bird here, and we have a pair that frequents the soot feeder and birdbath.
