I thought red-tail and posted as such but someone commented about the bars on the tail.

Agreed. A Coop would be much slimmer, with shorter wings. This guy is undergoing his preformative molt -- the upper back feathers are new.

The bars on the tail are typical of a juvenile Red-tail. A Coop at any age would have broader dark bars.

I have a question here. Immediately I noticed the bright yellow gape, thinking it was a juvenile, but one of my reference books mentions a yellow gape on an adult. I am confused...

Often depends on food. Two different adult individuals (non-releasable rescues) with and without the yellow:

The top bird here has a yellow eye, making it a juvenile.

The top bird here has a yellow eye, making it a juvenile.


His tail is completely red. His name is Diego and he lives at the California Raptor Center at UC Davis.

Here's a third non-releaseable adult Red-tailed Hawk at another rescue facility:
