maybe just a molting mallard? light and pic is bad I know... but it looked different than the other mallards around

Looks kinda like a Wood Duck to me!

The bill looks kinda thin but I think male Wood Duck

hmm that could be.. I saw so many mallards flying by wasnt thinking wood duck..

I agree, a Wood Duck drake in eclipse plumage. The "thin bill" is due to exposure problems with the photo.

thanks,,, wood duck didnt cross my mind, I saw the light colored head and was hoping something new, but all I saw were mallards all day so figured it was just a molting one

with the white trailing edge of the wing, in front of the blue, i vote for mallard

After a quick google image search it looks like Wood Ducks can show white by the speculum. And the head shape and facial pattern looks perfect for an eclipse male.
