We were on Coronado island in San Diego in July and saw a large bird fly by clutching a large branch. My husband thinks it was a eagle but I have found nothing about bald eagles being there or building nests in July. Could this be possible? I will try to upload the picture in a separate message.

Welcome to Whatbird, Teeny. On Coronado I would expect a large, hawk-like bird to be an Osprey. Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles are both rare at Coronado, while Ospreys are regular.

Undoubtedly an Osprey. Golden Eagles nest near where I live in the East County, way inland, on the sides of a cliff. The only nesting Bald Eagles in the county are at Lake Henshaw, near Warner Springs, quite a ways from Coronado.
