SoCal San Joaquin Sept. 7......... here's a blurry side view and a good moon shot. What bird is all brown with no wing bars? Wrentits do hang out in this particular place, but it looks too slender. Not a bushtit, unless it's a loner.

replying to myself....... I was also considering a female Common Yellowthroat [but would rather have a Wrentit!].

I'd be more inclined to consider Lazuli Bunting -- I think you could miss the wingbars on a Lazuli in this picture, I don't think you could on a Blue Grosbeak.

Hey, Liam, I think you got it! A juvenile without the "scales" on the underside. They do hang around that specific part of SJWS. And it was that size.

What you all saw as a thick bill, I saw a light throat under a slender bill............. oh well............

Yep. I just looked at this thread and Nutmeg Mannikin was my first impression. Surprisingly, I've yet to see these guys in the wild, but I have seen thousands in pet stores over the years. :)

And I've seen them in the wild many times, but the juveniles still puzzle me...... so plain.
