This weekend, and a few other times this fall my mom and I will be joining our local Hawk Watch. But I want to know: When is the best time to see hawks/other fly-bys? Should we go in the morning, or afternoon? I really want to see some cool birds-- there was already a fly-by Sandhill Crane!

Thanks!
Melissa

That is a good question, not one I had ever thought about. I believe the hawks begin moving when the temps warm the air. So about mid-morning.

I hope you will see some good birds. We may try to go to a HawkWatch in October.

Mid morning is when we saw the group (kettle) above our home. It was great to see them riding the thermal upwards!

It is hard to say really... I have spent many an early morning(years ago mind you) up at Hawk Mountain... and the early hours between say 8:30 and 11am had produced some great LOW veiws of birds past the watch. Ospreys would come through with freshly caught breakfast from nearby Leaser Lake.(although a few years back it had been drained) I guess it depends where the birds put down the day before. Other days mid-day had the highest concentration of birds and other days the later afternoon I've seen high numbers of raptors making a last push for the day. Also has a lot to do with the weather patterns in various places along the migration route.

Well, I meant mid morning (10:30-12:30), and wow! Just in those 2 hours I saw over 2,000 Broad-winged Hawks, 5 Red-shouldered Hawks, 10 Red-tailed Hawks, 20 Bald Eagles, 50 Turkey Vultures, 30 Black Vultures, 5 American Kestrels, and a few Osprey! (#s not exact). It was QUITE a morning, and I'm going back next weeked (ABA Young Birder's Conference)! :D

Thanks for the time pointers!!

Congratulations! You saw an amazing amount. I wonder if Jeffrey Gordon (ABA president) will speak at the conference. He was here in Iowa early this month for a young birder's day. I wish I was there, but my older children were and they said he is a noisy birder.

I like mornings and them early evening when they are settling down. You can catch a lot of silhouettes at that time.
