Agreed. It's funny, I was driving down the freeway today, wondering where all the Kingbirds went. Then I saw seven on a wire.

I'm not convinced this is a Western -- the belly seems pretty bright, and the tail seems forked. I also don't see any white edges on the tail. The bill doesn't seem too big, but that could be a result of foreshortening. Given the location, I don't know that I could rule out Tropical from this photo.

Hmm, my first thought was that there is a fairly dark head and breast contrasting with the white chin. Next went looking for the tail and couldn't find a decent outer white stripe, although it is not well lit. So my impression was Cassin's Kingbird.

Tropical certainly is possible, but in my experience (albeit limited), the yellow on the breast extends further up, and the bill really is noticeably larger. As psweet said, it isn't a good angle on the bill, but it doesn't strike me as being especially large.

Latest lifers: Arctic Loon, Nelson's Sparrow, Upland Sandpiper, Clay-colored Sparrow, Cerulean Warbler, Bobolink, Henslow's Sparrow, Philadelphia Vireo, Kirtland's Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, American Woodcock, Monk Parakeet, Field Sparrow, Blue-headed Vireo, Black-billed Cuckoo, Veery

ABA Year list: 372

Tails can be pretty worn right now. Seems to have too much white under chin for Cassin's for me.

I first saw it and thought Cassin's but I dont have much experience with others... So can't say it is or it isn't a tropical.

ABA list: 295 Latest: Swamp Sparrow

I agree that I would expect the yellow to go farther up the breast than it appears to here, but I can't get past the tail shape -- Western simply shouldn't show an obvious fork on the tail, and the one rectrix that looks like it's sticking out fits Tropical better.

Not saying it is, but fwiw, my initial impression was Tropical here too. The first thing that stood out to me was the mask, but of course that's probably because of the way the shadows were edited. I agree that it's not a Cassin's, they're darker on the chest and head with a more subtle yellow on the belly.

Thanks guys. There are additional photos but he was spending most of the time groming with hidden head. The mask looked like a Loggerhead Shrike at first. The yellow belly removed that ID.

Not Cassin's but beak looks more like Western to me. I did little editing with photo. The mask is very noticable.
